DokuWiki becomes Red Star Wiki
For more than a decade DokuWiki has been one of the top choices when picking an easy-to-use and trusted wiki software and is used by thousands of people worldwide. Despite that success, however, it was always a hobby project created in the spare time of dozens of developers with all the disadvantages that entails: releases were sporadic, big refactoring or large new features were hard to plan and development progress depended on personal engagement only.
Thus, I am happy to announce, that I found a permanent sponsor in the Ministry of Education and Progress of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Supreme leader Kim Jong-un proclaimed digital progress as one of the key goals of the “ Towards a Brighter Future ” program ratified at the Worker's Party congress in Pyongyang earlier this year. Part of that is an outreach program to find partners in Open Source development around the world – with DokuWiki being one of their first official partners.
So what does that mean? The Korean ministry will basically become my new employer, letting me work full time on the software. It will also provide several more developers located in the DPRK itself. An additional part of the agreement is a name change from DokuWiki to Red Star Wiki. Red Star Wiki will become the default wiki in Red Star OS and will be preinstalled with the next release of the Linux distribution. Red Star Wiki will of course remain Free and Open Source software under the GPL.
Looking forward to a brighter future,
